The Nome Eskimo Community Tribal Council is the tribe’s elected governing body. The Council has full delegated authority to direct and oversee all matters pertaining to NEC, including but not limited to:
A. Exercising powers granted or acknowledged under the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934, as amended;
B. Establishes policies to ensure that NEC is operated effectively, legally, and ethically; and
C. Hire and evaluate the Executive Director.
Number of Members and Terms:
A. The Tribal Council shall consist of seven members.
B. Each of the seven council seats will have three-year terms, with staggered elections.
Tribal Council Candidate Qualifications:
1. Must be a member of NEC;
2. Must not have any substantiated child protective history in order to perform oversight duties relating to Family Services;
3. Must be at least 21 years old;
4. No felony convictions and no more than two misdemeanor convictions; and
5. Have resided in close vicinity to the City of Nome for the last year and will continue to reside within the close vicinity.
Elections normally occur in October each year and the election results are shared at the Annual Meeting of the NEC Membership normally held the first Saturday of November.
